Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesh Chaturthi celebrated in August or September (BhadraPada Month)




Ganesh Chaturthi is the Birthday of Lord Ganesh, the most important deity of Parulekar family, and is celebrated all over Sindhudurg and Goa. Many Parulekars return to home for this festival, which is associated with a good harvest.  
 
Lord Ganesh, the deity of Parulekar family, is the God of knowledge. The 5-day festival begins with the installation of beautiful Ganesh idol in Padlos house. Every year it is not 5-day festival, sometimes 7-day or 9-days. Idol of Ganesh installed in colorfully decorated Room.

Many cultural events like "Bhajans", "Fugadi", "Aarati" are organized and all the family members participate in them with interest. Suppose Idol of Ganesh installed for 9 days then the last day i.e. 9th day is very important. Special thali is created for "Naivaidya". The meal is called as "Mhamana".

Last day Ganesh idol is take in procession to the accompaniment of music and dance for immersion in the river. Emotions run high as people chant 'Ganpati bappa moraya, pudhachya varshi lavkar ya' (Oh Lord Ganesh, please come back soon next year). In Math village Ganesh Visharjan is mostly done on fifth day or eleventh day.
